Plato’s Crito In this essay, I aim to prove that Socrates’s committed just act by examine surrendering his life. To do this, I will examine the arguments made by Plato to convince Socrates to escape from prison, as well as evaluating Socrates’s arguments against escaping from prison, while arguing that Socrates’s arguments were stronger. I will start by examining Plato’s arguments, and then move into Socrates’s arguments, while pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of both. I will touch on all of Socrates’s main arguments, however I will focus mainly on his argument that committing unjust actions can be harmful to one’s soul, and that having a ruined soul would render life not worth living. In his Crito, Plato lays out three arguments explaining why Socrates’s should escape the prison, flee to live in exile. He first argues that by choosing to remain in prison and be executed, Socrates would be hurting Plato in two ways; by forcing Plato to lose a good friend, and by hurting Plato’s reputation. Plato believes that since people will not be aware that Socrates chose to remain in prison, they will assume that Plato had the chance to help Socrates escape, and that he wasn’t willing to spend the money or put in the effort. This will lead people to believe that Plato cares more about his finances than his friend, and his reputation will be damaged beyond repair. Organizational commitment is the process by which a member of an organization is psychologically attached to the organization. According to the theories of organizational behavior, it essentially describes the feeling of the employees towards their jobs and their commitment towards their organization (Week 1 Video 1 Making Systems Thinking Sexy). According to the models of organizational commitments, three distinct components can be attributed to the commitment of an employee towards an organization. The affective model explains the emotional attachment of an employee with the organization. During the initial joining period of Shaun in LINK 650, he was proud and enthusiastic about his selection and exhibited high levels of affection. Therefore, it was affective commitment that made him stay. Continuance model explains the commitment of the employee based on continuity that makes him believe that quitting a respectable organization will be a costly decision with unacceptable unemplo yment duration. Shaun did not leave the well-reputed organization LINK 650 and continued to work based on his knowledge of organizational behavior as this might cost him a hard-earned job with the risk of unemployment. The normative model makes the employee stay back with the organization by feeling obligated and believing that it is correct way to do. This was not at all ethical and it was completely a corporate decision. Had I been in place of Mr. McKinnell, I would have arranged for increasing the business development and manufacturing of Pfizer in economically weaker zone of Kalamazoo, which would have boosted up the economical status of the dwellers, without terminating their jobs (Week 1 Video 2 Creating High Performance Workplaces). The officials from Pfizer stated that their decision to base the two global centers of manufacturing and drug safety in the area of Kalamazoo indicated good organizational citizenship and strong local commitment. According to me, Pfizer did not act as an organizational citizen as it intended to break up the world class operational facilities at Kalamazoo rather than keeping it together and ignored the skills of the people (Week 2 Chapter 2 Slides). The estimation of the employees to be terminated from their jobs was supposed to be approximately 2000 in the area of Kalamazoo. Moreover, they decided to halt or move the research and development facility that was once the most effective in the industry. These factors collectively pulled down the economic stability of Kalamazoo as Michigan was already facing budgetary issues and Pfizer only added to its problems, rather than solving it. The existing manufacturing site was also in a vulnerable state and therefore, I can conclude that Pfi zer did not show adequate social responsibility by increasing the financial burden of Kalamazoo. (3). The merging of a smaller organization with a larger organization needs to focus on the welfare of the employees, as they are the ones who are the driving force of an organization. Pharmacia was a much smaller organization when compared to Pfizer and therefore the existing employees of Pharmacia had bigger expectations of development. However, in contrast to this theory, Pfizer initiated the deal with an announcement for cost savings of $2.5 billion that might hit the employees and the operations. This was not a very good decision and they should have cared for the poor people of Kalamazoo, who were much dependent on the earnings from Pharmacia. I would have certainly not promoted this idea of closure of operations and termination of jobs, as it hits the working force of an organization at the most. Although the Jewish faith teaches nothing about homosexuality, it is still frowned upon in their eyes. Yet another faith in which being a homosexual is a controversial issue is with the Hindu faith. A form of love that is shared between a man and a woman in no way could be shared between a man and man or a woman and a woman, some Hindus believe. However, if a homosexual can feel love for a person of the same sex, isn’t that love the same love that can be shared between a heterosexual couple? In Hinduism, one of the big parts about being married is being able to bear a child; something in which a homosexual couple would not be able to do with just one another. However, there are other ways that a homosexual could have a child, adoption, for example. Nowhere in the sacred texts does it say that a romantic love can only be between a man and woman, thus a man and a man or a woman and a woman are at their own free will of being romantically involved with one another. Notice how God hasn’t had much say in which He cares if a person likes the same sex? Yes, the sacred texts of every religion are God’s words, but doesn’t He love all his children? Does He not want all of His children to love one another and accept each other as we are? If a homosexual wants to be a homosexual, they have that right and they should not be afraid to tell others how they feel inside. Instead, all should have welcome arms and give that person the love and support we all want. What if being a heterosexual wasn’t the norm? Would religion be the same? Every person has a right to believe in what they wish, however, the world would be a much more peaceful place if being a homosexual was not frowned upon by Muslims, Buddhist, Jains and Sikhs, and instead of homosexuality being a controversial issue among Jews and Hindus, why don’t all religions come together and recognize their brothers and sisters are not all the same?

Summary of the Article In his article, Sullivan argues that gay marriage is eligible for legalization by all means. Marriage is a social contract. Marriage is a physical and emotional bond between two people irrespective of their gender. People, who have been denied to fall in love with somebody despite the natural love they feel can best understand how it feels when a gay is denied the right to get married. Illegalizing gay marriage is a torture for the homosexual people whereas legalization of gay marriage would provide the homosexual people with grounds to have normal relationships with their parents and loved ones rather than being socially outcast. Gay parenting does not have any unfavorable impacts on the children’s psychology, Homosexual marriages have existed throughout the history in forms different from the traditional marriage. Dating, love, and rel ationship; everything becomes meaningless for them when they cannot get married. Without marriage, there is no commitment. Homosexuality occurs naturally, and this challenges all conservative reasons against the legalization of gay marriage. Therefore, gay marriage should be legalized. ... ls by excessively making use of such emotional words as â€Å"most public affront possible† (Sullivan 404) and calling the traditional form of marriage between a man and a woman a â€Å"circular fiet† (Sullivan 404). While referring to marriage as a public contract, Sullivan has just highlighted one aspect of marriage i.e. â€Å"bond between two people† thus excluding all others who are affected by the marriage between the two people that include but are not limited to their parents, and their own children. Marriage is not just about two people, it has its implications on other members of the family, as well as upon the nation as a whole that might be already suffering from a negative population growth rate, and homosexual marriages are definitely going to aggravate this social problem. Sullivan has made a logical fallacy by limiting the intrinsic status of the heterosexual marriage to its understanding as intrinsically procreative. Sullivan has a preconceived no tion that a marriage between an adult and a minor is unsustainable as one of the two parties does not understand the contract. If an adult and a minor marry each other with mutual consent, Sullivan should acknowledge that as an emotional bond too just like he approves of the emotional bond between two homosexuals. Sullivan has made broad generalizations that are unfair. For example, he says that everybody who speaks in favor of heterosexual marriage does not do so because he/she disparages the homosexual marriage, but because not doing so means demanding human virtue in excess. I don’t believe that this is the reason why people support heterosexual marriages. People support heterosexual marriages primarily because of their religious beliefs, and then because of considering its positive impacts on the society.
